SUMMARY:What You Do Matters: Lessons Learned from the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:The Holocaust was an unspeakable horror from WWII. After a visit to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington\, D.C. in 2006\, Todd Larson and Jason Kalish recognized that the Holocaust is much more than a chapter from a history book. The Holocaust provides important insight into the consequences when a government shifts the mission of police from protecting individuals to supporting the abuse of basic human rights. \nHow Germany changed in less than a decade from a free\, democratic\, and scientifically advanced society to a totalitarian regime that systematically targeted and murdered millions of its own citizens is a lesson a free society must learn. In the words of Chief Prosecutor Robert Jackson at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial in 1945\, “Civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored\, because it cannot survive their being repeated.” \nThis seminar\, “What You Do Matters”\, examines policing within the legal and political framework of Nazi Germany – a journey that eventually turned those who should protect life and liberty into those who intimidated\, humiliated\, deported\, and eventually murdered millions of innocent people. Using historical images and stories from the Holocaust\, facilitators engage students in a dialogue about the role of law enforcement in today’s communities and the importance of core values in ensuring the integrity and vibrancy of democracy. \nCourse Schedule \nWorking with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Jewish Community Foundation\, Todd offers a powerful curriculum to ensure that the core values of our democracy are upheld. \n\nCourse Overview\, Discussion Questions – 30 minutes\nShort film – Overview of the Holocaust\, and Self-Guided Tour of Exhibits – 30 minutes\nReflections\, short film – The Path to Nazi Genocide – 35 minutes\nSlippery Slope: Examination of Photographic Images – an interactive discussion – 85 minutes\nLessons from the Holocaust\, Closing comments\, and Wrap-up – 40 minutes\n\nSession Type: \nIn-person conference \nCancellation Policy: \n\nFull refund available up until 14 days prior to date.\n50% refund available up until 7 days prior to date.\nNo refunds will be made within 7 days of the date.

SUMMARY:Use of Force III: The Art of Communication
DESCRIPTION:POST Approved 4 Credits- Use of Force (10668-00028) Use of Force III: The Art of Communication \nEffective communication is the foundation of successful law enforcement. It bridges gaps\, fosters understanding\, and ensures that officers can carry out their duties with clarity\, respect\, and professionalism. In Minnesota\, communication has been at the forefront of police reform discussions\, particularly in use-of-force cases. However\, its impact extends far beyond that. Strong communication skills are essential for: \n\nPublic Safety and Trust: Effective communication helps law enforcement officers establish trust and credibility with the community. When officers communicate clearly and transparently\, it fosters better relationships and understanding\, which is essential for public safety.\nConflict Resolution: Many situations that law enforcement officers encounter requires swift and effective conflict resolution. Good communication skills allow officers to de-escalate potentially volatile situations\, reducing the risk of harm to themselves and others.\nInformation Gathering: Officers often need to gather information from various sources\, including witnesses\, victims\, and suspects. Clear communication ensures that they can obtain accurate and detailed information\, which is vital for investigation and decision-making.\nCollaboration: Law enforcement often involves collaboration with other agencies\, departments\, and community organizations. Effective communication facilitates better coordination and cooperation\, ensuring a cohesive approach to managing public safety.\nInternal Efficiency: Within law enforcement agencies\, good communication ensures that all members are informed and aligned with objectives and protocols. This internal clarity reduces misunderstandings and enhances operational efficiency.\n\nThis new four-part course will focus on an officer’s personal and professional worldview by identifying how to control\, de-escalate and manage themselves and others. They will examine the use of force as it relates to the policies and procedures. \nAt the center of the discussion will be Minnesota Statute § 609.066\, Authorized Use of Deadly Force by Peace Officers\, including the recent amendment to the four-decade statute placing new requirements on peace officers. \n\nWhat are the new state and federal requirements?\nHow has case-law evolved regarding authorized use of deadly force in Minnesota?\nAs a peace officer\, what expectations exist under these new laws?\n\nThis class will be engaging and allow for officers to participate in reality-based hypotheticals to better inform them of the law and policies while allowing each to articulate why force was or was not justified. \nSession Type:\nIn-person conference \nCancellation Policy:\n\nFull refund available up until 14 days prior to date.\n50% refund available up until 7 days prior to date.\nNo refunds will be made within 7 days of the date.
